Seven questions to ask before choosing home education — the ones I did not know to ask. It is not a case for home education. It is the seven things worth being honest with yourself about first, whichever way you end up going.

What am I actually hoping will change?
Not the answer you would give a relative. The one underneath it.
Two
What does a good day look like for this child?
Describe an ordinary Tuesday. If you cannot picture it, that is useful too.
Three
What can I realistically give — time, attention, money?
Be unkind about this. A plan that needs a version of you who does not exist will fail.
Four
Who else is in this with me?
A partner, a grandparent, one other family. Doing it entirely alone is the hardest version.
Five
What happens if it does not work?
Knowing the way back makes the decision smaller. There is almost always a way back.
Six
What am I afraid people will say?
Write the sentence you are dreading. It loses most of its power on paper.
Seven
What would I need to see in six months to know this was right?
Pick two things you could actually notice. Not test scores.
Where shall I send it?
